The Shenendehowa Central School District has accepted the resignation of a high school physical education teacher and assistant varsity softball coach after allegations surfaced that she may have had a sexual relationship with a high school softball player.

The resignation of Sara Coddington, who was hired by the district in 2006, was accepted by the district’s Board of Education on June 21 and was effective immediately, according to Kelly DeFiciani, a district spokeswoman.

The family of the softball player first brought the allegations to state police, said Maureen Tuffey, a state police spokeswoman. Tuffey said state police investigated but did not charge Coddington.

“We could not develop evidence that this was a crime,” Tuffey said today, so state police turned the matter over to district administrators.

One of the issues is related to the age of the softball player, Tuffey said. The age of consent in New York State is 17 for boys and girls involved in a sexual relationship.

DeFiciani said Friday that the district is not permitted to discuss the matter. She said the only thing she could say is that “the district complied with all education laws in reporting misconduct to the state Education Department and/or the police.”

DeFiciani said Coddington tendered her resignation to the district just a week after the district learned of the allegations.

Coddington could not be reached.
