If you think you can dance, that you’ve got talent or that you have American Idol potential — or you’re even a comedian or storyteller — the Saratoga County Fair wants you.
The 170th annual fair, to be held July 19-24 at the county fairgrounds on Prospect Street, is looking for contestants for its annual From Start to Star talent competitions. At the moment, the chances of winning are good.
Entries this year have been slow, officials said, for reasons they can’t explain. Contestants must enter by Friday.
“We have had a lot of success stories from our Start to Star talent contests,” said Audrey Poitras, talent contest coordinator. Previous winners, she said, include Justin Joyner from the rock band Gravity, Brittny Kissinger, who performed on Broadway in “Annie,” and Chendell Aufiero, who went on to win at the State Fair in Syracuse a few years ago and now owns her own private dance studio.
Talents can include comedy, drama, vocal music, dance, instrumental music, clowning, ventriloquism, magic, impersonation, dramatic reading, gymnastics and story-telling.
Poitras said there are talent contests during the afternoon and evening throughout fair week. While there are youth categories, she said people of any age can enter, if they have a special talent they’d like to show off.
The fair currently has only a fraction of the usual 165 or so entries, but Poitras expects the number will rise over the next week.
“It’s not unusual to get an influx at the last minute,” she said.
Applications are available at www.saratogacountyfair.org, under the Exhibitor Forms tab, or at the fair office.
Winners receive cash payments, as well as trophies. The Best of Fair prizes are as high as $150.
The Rising Star award will be presented in recognition of an act in the 12 and under age group, based on the judges’ consensus. There is also an award for the most promising singer/vocalist.
Additional information may be obtained by calling the Saratoga County Fair office at 885-9701 or Audrey Poitras at 899-2646.
