Underwater hand-harvesting crews have started a summer-long project pulling invasive Eurasian watermilfoil from the sandy bottom of Lake George.
This is the third consecutive season of hand-weeding the lake to clear dense beds of the nuisance plant, which crowds out native plants and snags swimmers and boat propellers.
The non-profit FUND for Lake George has contracted with Aquatic Invasive Management from Lake Placid to bring a large team of experienced divers to work on the project, which operates under a permit from the Adirondack Park Agency.
In 2009 and 2010 over 500,000 watermilfoil plants were removed from the lake.
The Lake George Park Commission has identified over 175 sites of watermilfoil in Lake George and successfully cleared the majority of them.
