Organizers of a celebration planned to mark the opening of a new bridge over Lake Champlain are putting off the party because of uncertainty about when the $70 million span will be finished.

The bridge is being built between Addison, Vt., and Crown Point, N.Y., replacing one demolished in December 2009 amid safety concerns.

A volunteer group planning an opening celebration had set the date for Oct. 15-16, expecting a bridge opening date of Oct. 9. But New York inn owner Karen Hennessy, co-chairwoman of the volunteer Lake Champlain Bridge Community, tells the Burlington Free Press that with no firm completion date, the party’s being put off until May.

Transportation Department spokeswoman Carol Breen says it’s impossible to say when the work will finish.
