A 49-year-old man was being evaluated in Saratoga Hospital this afternoon after he intentionally drove his car into Saratoga Lake off the state boat launch near Route 9P.

City police said Daniel Burgess, who works at the Saratoga Race Course on Union Avenue, was not seriously injured in the 1:15 p.m. incident and was rescued from the water quickly. After the incident, he was charged with third-degree assault and two counts of criminal contempt regarding a domestic incident, apparently at the race course.

Earlier in the afternoon, Burgess was questioned by track security at the Saratoga Race Course about a domestic dispute when he got into his car, and drove from the track going east on Union Avenue. The track security officers followed him and notified city police, according to Daniel Silver, a spokesman for New York Racing Association.

Lt. Sean Briscoe of the city police department said Burgess allegedly drove out Union Avenue and intentionally drove into Saratoga Lake off the state boat launch just east of the Route 9P bridge. He was able to get onto the roof of his car and was taken into custody.
