Amsterdam Fifth Ward Supervisor Karl Baia was arrested late Friday night after city police said he broke into a Virginia Lane apartment and engaged in a physical altercation with a woman.

Police said Baia, 28, was charged with second-degree burglary, a class C felony, after officers responded to a 911 hang up call from 200 Virginia Lane, Apt. G-10. When officers arrived, the woman told them Baia broke in through the front door of her apartment, causing damage to the door.

The woman said he then began yelling at her and refused to leave, according to police. The physical altercation between the two then took place in front of a young child, police said. Baia finally left, police said, after the woman dialed 911.

Police located Baia at his home at 48 St. Paul St. in Amsterdam and arrested him at 11:11 p.m.

In addition to felony burglary, Baia was also charged with endangering the welfare of a child and fourth-degree criminal mischief, both class A misdemeanors. The Republican supervisor is being held in Montgomery County jail on $5,000 bail, police said.
