The New York Army National Guard is sending 125 soldiers from the Buffalo area to eastern areas of the state to help flood-ravaged communities recover from Tropical Storm Irene.
The state Division of Military and Naval Affairs says the soldiers from the 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry left Buffalo’s Masten Avenue armory this morning and headed to Greene, Delaware and Schoharie counties.
They’ll provide traffic control, help coordinate volunteers and support recovery missions.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo already mobilized more than 2,500 members of the National Guard as the storm approached late last month. Guard officials say nearly 900 troopers remain on duty, helping in the Catskills and Adirondacks.
The western New York contingent will relieve other soldiers who have been on duty for the past 12 days.
