Emergency management officials are calling for the voluntary evacuation of Rotterdam Junction as the Mohawk River rises once again as the result of the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee.

Officials are asking all residents to be out of their homes no later than 7 p.m. The Mohawk is expected to crest between midnight to 6 a.m., though officials were unsure of the level of that crest.

“Hopefully, nothing happens, but we’re erring on the side of caution,” said Schenectady County fire coordinator John Nuzback.

With the Lock 9 bridge over the river still closed because of damage caused by flooding from Tropical Storm Irene, officials are concerned that residents have only two ways out of the community, with Route 5S in both directions susceptible to flooding.

In addition, they said they are concerned that debris that remains in Lock 9 from last week’s flooding could form dams and exacerbate any new flooding.
