New York’s apple harvest is under way.

Apple growers say their crops weathered the recent heavy rains quite well. That’s in contrast to dairy and corn farmers in some eastern parts of New York. Growers say a sunny, largely arid summer produced apples with high sugar levels.

McIntosh apples are being picked this week. The New York Apple Association says Gala and Honeycrisp apples will be ready to pick next week in most orchards.

New York ranks second behind Washington in apple production.
