The Kiwanis Club of Schenectady is sponsoring a fundraiser on Saturday with a twist — an ugly car contest.

The fundraiser will benefit the club’s youth services programs in Schenectady and Albany and Mothers Against Drunk Driving’s Students Against Drunk Driving programs in area schools.

The club is hoping to raise $10,000 through the event, said club member Doug McPhee. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Liberty and Nott Terrace parking lot. It also will feature craft booths and family events.

What makes the fundraiser different is that the contest will offer trophies to “ugly” vehicles — vehicles with the most rust and dents.

Trophies also will be awarded to vehicles with the worst paint job, with the best sounding pipes and more.

“When I moved here from southern California 3 1/2 years ago, I was quite surprised by how many car shows are here. I proposed and ugly car contest to the club last year. We put it together pretty well. We are happy to have some great sponsors,” McPhee said. “I think it will be a great event.”

The club is expecting the participation of between 75 and 100 cars, trucks and motorcycles at the event. “This is the first time we have done this. We usually do golf tournaments,” McPhee said.

Three people will serve as judges. They are working with the Saratoga Auto Museum to develop criteria for the show. “We are trying to do it with some sense of objectivity. We want to make it as fair as possible,” McPhee said.
