The Saratoga County Public Health Nursing Service will hold 20 seasonal flu vaccination clinics at locations around the county in October and November.
This year’s flu season has yet to begin, but in some years can begin as early as October.
The federal Centers for Disease Control recommends people get their vaccinations as early as possible, because it takes about two weeks for the body to develop immunity.
The CDC said this year’s vaccine will protect against the same three flu strains as were prevalent last winter, including the H1N1 virus.
Some drug stores and physicians are already offering the shots.
In an average year, according to the CDC, flu results in 226,000 hospitalizations and 23,600 deaths in the United States. People younger than 5 or older than 65, pregnant women and people with certain chronic medical conditions are considered to be at higher risk.
The CDC recommends vaccinations for everyone over age 6 months.
The Public Health Nurses, based in Saratoga Springs, offer immunization shots to all county residents age 19 and older. The cost is $15, though in some cases private health insurance companies can be billed directly.
