The State University of New York is creating a scholarship fund for the students whose families were hit by historic flooding caused by recent tropical storms.

The SUNY trustees on Tuesday created the SUNY Helps Fund to receive donations from charitable foundations, students, employees and alumni.

The fund will be used to pay for scholarships at SUNY colleges and universities for victims of the flooding that hit the Adirondacks, the Mohawk Valley, the Catskills and the Southern Tier in late August and early September.

On their own, students have volunteered at evacuation shelters and contributed to funds collected in dormitories.
