New York transportation officials say a project to pave the main route between Saranac Lake and Lake Placid has been postponed until the spring because of damage to other Adirondack roads caused by Tropical Storm Irene.

The state Department of Transportation says today that a contractor had planned to start paving Route 86 in Essex County in September. But DOT officials say extensive damage to roads from flooding during the late August storm prevented the contractor from getting equipment into the region and starting the five-week project.

They say there’s not enough time to complete the project before cold weather sets in.

The paving is now scheduled for next spring, with completion expected before Memorial Day.

In the meantime, DOT crews are making temporary repairs to Route 86.
