New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo warns another tough budget is coming up, with at least a $2 billion deficit.
Cuomo says the state can’t afford to take over counties’ Medicaid costs. There’s been a big push by local governments to shed the mounting cost of the health care program for the poor.
Cuomo also opposes efforts to resume an income tax charge on New Yorkers making more than $200,000 a year. That tax will end in December.
Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver is now pushing a new proposal that would affect only those making more than $1 million a year. His bill would direct 30 percent of revenue to schools.
Silver calls it a “moral imperative” to better fund schools. He says less than 1 percent of taxpayers would be affected.
