Wayne Simpson scored three times, Max Novak added two and 11th-ranked Union game Rick Bennett his first win as head coach in impressive style, rolling to an 8-1 win over Army in the college hockey season opener for both teams at Tate Rink.
Simpson became the second player in Union’s Division I history to score three goals in the first game of the season. Josh Jooris did it last year against Sacred Heart.
After spotting Army a 1-0 lead early in the first period, Matt Hatch, Kevin Sullivan and Novak gave Union a 3-1 lead. The Dutchmen made it 6-1 in the second on goals by Simpson, Novak and Greg Coburn.
Simpson scored twice in the third to complete the hat trick, the first of his career.
Goalie Troy Grosenick made 17 saves to earn his first collegiate win.
