Greg Squires’ second goal of the game enabled No. 12 Western Michigan to a 2-2 non-conference tie with 11th-ranked Union in the Dutchmen’s Messa Rink opener on Friday.
Squires outraced Union defenseman Shaun Stuart for a puck along the boards after Stuart couldn’t keep it in the Broncos’ zone. Squires fired a shot from the right circle past goalie Troy Grosenick with 7:13 left in the third period.
Sam Coatta gave Union a 1-0 lead early in the first period. Squires tied in late in the first.
After a scoreless second period, Mat Bodie’s right-point shot beat a screened Nick Pisellini at 2:57 of the third to give Union (1-0-1) a 2-1 lead.
Grosenick stopped 32 shots, while Pisellini made 30 saves.
The two teams meet again Saturday at 7 p.m.
