Sophomore forwards Daniel Carr scored three times and had an assist, and sophomore goalie Troy Grosenick had 21 saves in a bounce-back effort, leading 13th-ranked Union to a 5-1 ECAC Hockey victory over RPI at Houston Field House.
Carr, who scored 20 goals last season, came into the game with just two. It was his second career hat trick. The other came against Army Dec. 11, 2010.
After Nick Bailen gave RPI a 1-0 lead on a power-play goal 5:34 into the game, Cart set up Kelly Zajac’s goal less than three minutes later. Carr broke the tie with a power-play goal at 12:49 of the first.
Jeremy Welsh made it 3-1 at 5:29 of the second period. Carr got his second goal when he tipped a Mat Bodie left-point drive past goalie Bryce Merriam midway through the second.
Carr completed his hat trick with an empty-net goal late in the game.
Grosenick was solid. He was pulled from Saturday’s start against Yale after allowing four goals on 18 shots.
