A search and rescue mission ended this afternoon in Schoharie County after authorities found the body of a downstate hunter reported missing Thursday evening.
Those who reported him missing said he’d been hunting in the area in the past but believe he was wearing light clothing.
Rescuers conducted a brief search in the dark off of West Fulton Road Thursday night after authorities learned the Yonkers man, aged 54, was last seen at about 5 p.m. Thursday, Sheriff Tony Desmond said.
A search resumed this morning involving state Forest Rangers, Sheriff’s deputies, volunteer firemen from the West Fulton, Summit and Middleburgh fire departments and the sheriff’s tactical and rescue force.
Desmond said authorities found the man’s body off Cemetery Road in the Mallet Pond State Forest and medical personnel were on their way to the scene. It was too early to provide further details, he said.
West Fulton Road traverses the center of Schoharie County, an undulating, mountainous region of forests with thousands of acres of state land including the Patria, Burnt-Rossman Hills, Mallet Pond and Petersburg Pass state forests.
