A targeted effort is under way in Albany County, watching for those who illegally park in handicapped spaces, The Albany County Traffic Safety Board said.

The effort, dubbed Project Access, coincides with today’s Black Friday shopping and began this morning at 7, running to this evening at 10.

Albany County law enforcement agencies will pay close attention to the spaces, to ensure that only those eligible to park in them are doing so.

The goal is to increase awareness and compliance of handicapped parking issues and to re-educate the public regarding the difficulties encountered by persons with disabilities.

It is the 47th such effort since the program began in 1994. Since then, 2,251 summonses have been issued, resulting in nearly $258,000 in fines.
