Schenectady man faces attempted murder, other counts

A city man has been indicted on an attempted murder count, accused of attacking a man trying to mediate a dispute, prosecutors said last week.

Quincy Atwell, 30, of 1307 Second Ave., was indicted on one count of second-degree attempted murder and two counts of first-degree assault, as well as menacing and endangering the welfare of a child.

Atwell is accused of trying to kill another man Oct. 22 in an alley off Spring Street, prosecutors said. Atwell had had a previous confrontation with a child in the neighborhood, and the victim then stepped in to try to resolve the dispute, prosecutor Laurie Cummings said.

“He thought he could help out and resolve the situation between the two of them,” Cummings said. “When he did that, the defendant just kind of turned on him.”

Atwell had a knife in his hand and cut the victim across his face, causing deep cuts across his nose and an ear. When the victim tried to cover his face, Atwell continued the assault, cutting the back of the man’s head.

Witnesses made at least two 911 calls to report the attack. The victim lost a large amount of blood, and his wounds required staples and stitches to close.

Atwell is being represented by attorney Steve Signore.

Also in Schenectady County Court last week:

* Orlando Lovero, 36, of 710 Windsor Terrace, was indicted on three counts of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument and one count of fourth-degree grand larceny.

Lovero is accused of forging checks from a business and taking more than $2,700 in September, officials have said.

* Peter Ferri, 42, of 306 Autumn Run, was indicted on two counts of driving while intoxicated, accused of driving drunk June 28 on State Street at Fagan Avenue in Niskayuna, officials said.

* Paul Schuman, 54, of 2333 Waters Road, Glenville, was indicted on two counts of driving while intoxicated, accused of driving drunk on Interstate 890 in Rotterdam on Oct. 25, officials said.
