Behind the Broadcast: Sinkoff embarking on new career, has no regrets

Brian Sinkoff has a new job, and it’s not in the media.

The former ESPN Radio 104.5 The Team (WTMM) sportstalk show host has taken a job as a real-estate agent with Coldwell Banker Prime Properties.

Sinkoff, who hosted the highly successful “Sound-Off with Sinkoff” from 3-7 p.m., was fired Sept. 16 in what program director Brian Noe called “a business decision.” Bruce Jacobs replaced Sinkoff.

Sinkoff will still keep his hand in the Capital Region media. He hosts “Time Warner Cable Sports Press Box” on TWCS-3, and will work as a sideline reporter on TWCS-3 sports broadcasts.

“I think it was time for a change,” Sinkoff said Wednesday morning. “It’s something that I was actually thinking about for about six months before everything shook down. I talked to some people in the [real estate business], and I’ve always had a love for real estate. It’s just something where I wanted to be more in control of my destiny.

“Real estate is, basically, a bus­iness of people, not necessarily of buildings. Being in journalism for almost 20 years, that’s really what I did. I cultivated relationships, and made a lot of contacts. I think I had some good relationships, and that’s what a lot of real estate is. To me, it seemed like a natural fit.”

Sinkoff’s family played into his decision, too.

“My family is my No. 1 priority,” Sinkoff said. “When you have a little one, you think about all of those things that are important to you. Not that I don’t love radio, but the bottom line is when you have a successful show like I did and whether it was No. 1, like it was in the last [ratings] book, or whether it was consistently in the top five, to have you be let go for no rhyme or reason, what part of anyone would want to stay in something like that?”

Hoop madness

Time Warner Cable Sports-3 will be busy with college basketball broadcasts over the next week.

It starts today with a double-header from the Times Union Center. At 4 p.m., it’s the Capital Region women’s basketball battle between Siena and the University at Albany. That will be followed at 7 p.m. by the Siena men taking on MAAC-foe Loyola.

On Monday at 7 p.m., it’s the annual men’s game between Siena and UAlbany. This game will also be on the radio. WGDJ-AM (1300) has the Siena perspective, while WOFX-AM (980) is the UAlbany station.

Tuesday night at 7, TWCS-3 has the Marshall-Syracuse contest. On Wednesday, UAlbany hosts Colgate at 7 p.m.

TWCS-1 will televise two games. Tonight at 7, it’s Army at Binghamton. Buffalo visits Niagara at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

High school hoops

Gloversville radio station WENT-AM (1340) will tip off its 28-game regular-season high school schedule Tuesday, when Gloversville hosts Green Tech.
