Union beats RPI, 5-2, in Lake Placid Festivus Faceoff

Three-goal second period for Dutchmen.

Wayne Simpson and Shayne Gostisbehere scored late second-period goals that helped 10th-ranked Union to a 5-2 non-conference college hockey victory over RPI on Saturday n the Festivus Faceoff at Herb Brooks Arena.

Simspon’s goal, coming on two-man power-play advantage, gave the Dutchmen (8-3-5) a 3-2 lead with 4:03 left in the second. Gostisbehere, a freshman defenseman, scored his first collegiate goal with 1:31 remaining in the period.

Daniel Carr scored in the third for Union. Matt Hatch and Jeremy Welsh had the other Union goals, and goalie Troy Grosenick made 23 saves.

CJ Lee and Mark McGowan scored for RPI (3-13).
