The Montgomery County Historical Society is getting a $10,000 grant to help restore Fort Johnson, which sustained extensive damage from flooding in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene.
The Preservation League of New York State is presenting the grant from American Express to the society today at Old Fort Johnson, just west of Amsterdam.
The historical society owns Old Fort Johnson, the 18th-century homestead of Sir William Johnson, an influential figure during the French and Indian War and afterward.
The National Historic Landmark was inundated by more than 5 feet of water when heavy rains from Irene caused the Mohawk River to overflow its banks in late August. Interior repairs have to be made before the museum can reopen this year.
