The police chief is not going to retire after all, according to an email he sent to Mayor Gary McCarthy.

McCarthy, who has not spoken to the chief all day, said he got the email this afternoon.

Police Chief Mark Chaires was clearly angry in the email, McCarthy said, and clearly stated that he won’t retire.

“He’s going to be there,” McCarthy said.

As to why the chief himself issued a statement saying he would not “confirm or deny” his retirement, McCarthy said the chief is upset.

“He wants to fight the article,” McCarthy said.

The Times Union published a story today citing unnamed sources who said Chaires is retiring.

McCarthy added that he didn’t ask Chaires to retire.

“Absolutely not,” he said. “He functions with my full and unquestioned support.”

The email has left City Hall employees even more confused. Their day started with public statements that led them to believe the chief was retiring. Even Director of Operations William Winkler thought the chief was leaving.
