A Schenectady man was arrested Wednesday night for allegedly firing an automatic weapon on the bike path in the vicinity of Clarendon Street.

The incident happened around 8:30 p.m. Witnesses reported a man firing an assault rifle; a burst of automatic fire was audible a quarter-mile away on Maxon Road Extension.

Officers responded to the area and found a suspect matching the description given, according to police spokesman Lt. Mark McCracken.

A brief foot chase occurred, and the suspect ran into a house at 444-446 Manhattan St. That house was put on lock-down.

“It appears that he has friends there or resides there,” he said.

Detained for questioning and eventually arrested was Luis J. Gomez, 30, of 1513 Van Vranken Ave., who has been charged with felony reckless endangerment.

McCracken also said he did not know what the suspect’s intended target was nor his motive.

“At this time, we have no reasons to believe anybody was struck,” he said.

McCracken said he did not know how many shots were fired, but shell casings were recovered at the scene. Police radio transmissions indicated about 20 casings were recovered.

Also arrested that night was 59-year-old Eileen L. Black of 428 Manhattan St. on misdemeanor charges of obstructing governmental administration and harassment and a violation of harassment in connection with an incident that happened at the scene. McCracken was not able to provide details.
