The Galway Central School District has a new acting superintendent as its leader recovers from emergency surgery last month.
William Scott will oversee the district for an undetermined period of time, either until Kimberly LaBelle returns or until a new superintendent is chosen, according to a contract that the Board of Education approved at its July 5 meeting.
Scott on Tuesday said LaBelle is expected to return, but he’s not sure when.
According to school board meeting minutes, LaBelle had emergency surgery June 9.
Scott retired as superintendent of Northern Adirondack Central School District near the Canadian border in 2008 after 29 years in education and relocated to the town of Wilton.
More recently, he served a yearlong stint as interim superintendent in the Hadley-Luzerne Central School District during the 2011-12 school year while the school district searched for a replacement for its departed superintendent.
He also has worked as a substitute teacher in the Saratoga Springs City School District since his retirement.
At Galway, Scott will make $500 a day, according to the contract. If LaBelle resigns, he will become interim superintendent under the same contract terms.
The district has experienced some other administrative turnover lately.
Paul Berry, director of assessment, technology and student affairs, was named superintendent at Hadley-Luzerne, while junior/senior high school principal and athletic director Pete Bednarek moved to Scotia-Glenville schools to be high school principal.
The district hired Brita Donovan as the athletic director and associate junior/senior high school principal.
Donovan also will take over some of Berry’s former duties.
Elementary principal Norman Griffin plans to retire in August, and Michelle McDougall has been hired to take his place.
Also, Galway and Hadley-Luzerne hired a shared business administrator, Tim Hilker, who will assist both of the school districts with budgeting and finance issues.
