FARMINGTON — Officials at Finger Lakes Casino and Racetrack say five horses have been rescued from a burning barn.

Spokesman Steve Martin says the fire started early this morning inside the “pony” barn on the west side of the track, located in the Ontario County town of Farmington, outside Rochester. He says it housed horses that escorted thoroughbreds to the starting gate.

Martin says all five horses inside the barn were removed from the building unharmed. He says the airplane hangar-type structure has been deemed a total loss.

The fire was reported soon after 6 a.m. today. Several fire departments doused the flames in about an hour.

Martin says no thoroughbreds or other barns were affected by the blaze. He says the cause of the fire is being investigated.
