Saratoga’s bed and breakfasts, gourmet boutiques, taverns and summer attractions have placed it on CNN’s list of the top five New York getaways.

Well, getaways that aren’t the Hamptons.

In a Tuesday feature, CNN recommended a few “enchanting regions” in the state for New Yorkers looking to get out of the Big Apple’s sweltering heat and crowds. With attractions like the Saratoga Race Course and the variety of concerts and performances at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, the national news channel ranked Saratoga Springs second for a summer getaway.

Here are a few highlights from author Annie Fitzsimmons’ piece:

“If you’ve ever dreamed of quitting your high-stress job and opening a bakery, strolling the main street of Saratoga Springs just might convince you to do it,” she wrote. “It’s like a movie set of what an upstate town should look like.”

Touching on the historic city’s renown for its mineral water, natural springs, Skidmore College and horse races, including the Travers Stakes, Fitzsimmons also lauded Saratoga’s lesser-known charms:

“A great place to stay is the Saratoga Arms, a beautiful B&B housed in an old brick home, with a front porch perfect for a morning cup of coffee,” she wrote. “At Putnam Market & Wine, you can pick up local gourmet goodies, like jars from Saratoga Peanut Butter Company. A night out inevitably ends on tiny Caroline Street, with people spilling out of cute pubs and bars, including Saratoga City Tavern, which has the only rooftop bar in town.”

Also making the list of New York’s top five getaways were the historic village of Greenport (ranked No. 1), Lake George, the Hudson River Valley and Skaneateles.
