Indie singer-songwriter Graham Alexander and synth-tinged power poppers Jukebox the Ghost are heading to this year’s LarkFEST.
On Monday, Exit 97.7, WEXT-FM, and the Lark Street Business Improvement District announced most of the artists that will perform at the 31st annual street festival on Sept. 15. The radio station is sponsoring the live music at the festival for the third year in a row.
Once again, music will be spread across two stages at the festival. Jukebox the Ghost and local artists MaryLeigh & the Fauves, Sevendys, The City Never Sleeps and Headband Jack will perform on the Madison Stage, at the corner of Madison and Lark Streets.
The Washington Stage, at the corner of Washington and Lark Streets, will host Alexander and locals Lucky Jukebox Brigade, Erin Harkes, Northern Faces and Dirty Paris. Two national headliners, one for each stage, will be announced Friday morning on WEXT-FM.
“This year, I think the biggest thing is — we heard a lot of feedback that people were saying they wanted more local music on the stages,” Chris Wienk, music director and afternoon DJ at WEXT-FM, said. “And so we actually have reduced the number of nationals and increased the number of locals. We didn’t do it in a dramatic fashion; we only changed one of the slots on each of the stages, so there’s two more local bands and two fewer national bands this year than last year.”
Philadelphia-based Alexander released his debut self-titled solo album in December of last year. Before that, he was on Broadway, starring as Paul McCartney in 150 performances of “RAIN — A Tribute to The Beatles.” Appropriately, his own music bears a strong Beatlesque pop undercurrent amidst snarling indie guitars.
Jukebox the Ghost originally formed in the Washington, D.C., area, but is currently based out of Brooklyn. The band’s third album, “Safe Travels,” was released this past June.
