The Animal Protective Foundation of Schenectady and sponsor Price Chopper will be hosting the 20th annual Fireplug 500 Walk for Animals on Sept. 8 from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. in Central Park.
The fundraiser, the longest-running of its kind in the area, will benefit care provided by the APF for homeless pets, their adoption and the foundation’s community spay and neuter program.
Each registered walker will receive a doggy bag with toys, samples and other treats along with a bandana for each animal.Activities at the event include claw-clipping by Pet Spas of America, an “Ask the Vet” booth and the “Rescue Roundup,” which gives participants an opportunity to meet adoptable pets from the APF and a number of other organizations.
Prizes will be given to fundraisers who match or surpass goals set by the APF, beginning with an acrylic beverage tumbler fit with the Spay/Neuter/Adopt/Love logo for anyone who raises $100 or more. Top prize is two tickets to the APF’s popular dinner and auction event, “Tails by Twilight,” for those who raise $1,500 or more. All prizes are cumulative, so those who raise $1,500 get all prizes for the lower goals, too.
Participants may walk with or without a dog, alone or as part of a team. Those walking with a dog are asked to make sure their pet is friendly with other dogs and people and to keep their dog leashed at all times. Retractable leashes are discouraged.
All walkers must turn in pledges and pick up prizes between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. at the park’s pavilion.
