Trustco Bank recently installed a tall flagpole at their corporate headquarters. That symbol of patriotism will soon be followed by examples of American initiative and community involvement.
According to TrustCo Bank Corp NY spokesman Robert Leonard, a wall of fame will be built near the flagpole to display plaques bearing the names of Trustco Hall of Fame inductees. New members of the Hall of Fame will also be honored at a special luncheon at Trustco’s corporate headquarters at the time of their induction.
Leonard said in an interview that TrustCo Bank has noticed a trend in philanthropic award ceremonies.
Leonard said, “We’ve seen throughout the years that at a lot of these ceremonies the same people tend to be honored year after year …There are a lot of great philanthropists out there who give a lot of money and time to help a community. On the other hand, there are a lot of people who work all week and then go to Cobleskill to help out a year [after the flood], or volunteer their time at the Rose Garden in Schenectady…”
According to Leonard, Bank President and CEO Robert J. McCormick had the idea to create the Trustco Hall of Fame to give these people their due.
In a release, McCormick stated, “Ordinary people do extraordinary things to help their community. These individuals work hard every day to make a difference and ask nothing for themselves. We want to honor these Home Town Heroes who might otherwise go unnoticed.”
Members of the public can make nominations for Hall of Fame inductees on Trustco Bank’s website trustcobank.com, or by visiting any Trustco branch. A committee will then review the nominations and announce the winners at the end of the program. The 2012 program began on July 30 and will run until Sept. 28. Five individuals or groups will be added each year.
Leonard said that anyone who lives where Trustco has a branch can be nominated. That’s mostly in New York state, but Trustco also has branches in New Jersey, Vermont, Massachusetts and Florida.
