In what could be seen as a sign of continued recovery, another set of FEMA trailers that were called “home” by victims of tropical storms Irene and Lee are up for auction.
The U.S. General Services Administration has held two auctions since May to dispose of dozens of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Temporary Housing Units that were turned in by those who used them.
More than 100 were brought to Schoharie County for distribution to needy flood victims in more than 20 affected counties. GSA spokeswoman Renee Miscione said in an email Tuesday that 20 of those units will be sold during the latest auction.
“Part of GSA’s mission includes helping federal agencies dispose items that are no longer needed, which includes auctions and public sale,” Miscione said. “These auctions offer the public opportunities to purchase these items, and the sales return funds to the federal government.”
A total of 45 of the units, stored outside the former Guilford Mills factory building, have been sold so far, according to Miscione. The trailers auctioned off so far include temporary residences built by TL Industries, such as a “Park Model,” a 12- by 40-foot, two-bedroom, two-bathroom mobile home.
FEMA earlier this year said the units cost the federal government between $20,000 and $25,000 each.
The units are not being sold for use as a residence but are suggested as a fishing or hunting camp or for small office space, camping or storage.
