If you were planning to listen to the University at Albany football team’s season-opening game against Colgate tonight at 6 on WOFX-AM (980), you will have FOX Sports Radio programming instead.
After a 12-year run on WOFX, the Great Danes have left. The school is moving the football and men’s basketball games to its college radio station, WCDB-FM (90.9).
It seems like a strange move, but there is more to it than that. The school will be streaming the games on its website.
“Long story short, the America East [basketball conference] is going toward an HD [high definition] streaming network, where a lot of the college sports are going,” said Charlie Voelker, associate athletic director of external affairs. “A lot of [schools] don’t pay to be on the radio. Traditionally, we’ve paid to be on the radio.”
UAlbany doesn’t want to do that anymore.
“We’re looking to utilize our resources to meet our needs going forward with streaming and the website,” Voelker said. “Stony Brook’s model is pretty good. They use their college radio station as, basically, a format for streaming. They stream games on audio, and they stream their games [with a] video/audio mix. We had to decide what we’re going to do and how we were going about it. We decided, for right now, that’s the direction we’re going to go. We’re focusing on improving our website. We’re focusing on improving our video and audio streaming, and focusing on where the industry is going.”
Voelker added that all of the Danes’ sports will have video streams. It will be interesting to see how it works out.
John Cooper, regional programming manager for Clear Channel of Albany, WOFX’s parent company, would not comment on the matter.
Even though the Danes won’t be on WOFX, Cooper did say there are no plans to move the Syracuse football broadcasts to the station. The Orange’s games are carried by another Clear Channel of Albany
station, WGY-AM (810) and WGY-FM (103.1). Cooper added that WOFX will air national college football games during the season.
Union College football is back on WABY-AM (1160) and Teamline.cc for another season. The Dutchmen host Salve Regina today at 1 p.m.
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s football season starts next Saturday. The Engineers’ games are on WRPI-FM (91.5) and www.-wrpi.org.
New show on TWCS
Time Warner Cable Sports announced Friday that a new show, “New York State High School Football Weekly,” will premiere Tuesday at 6 p.m.
The one-hour show will run every Tuesday through the season.
“ ‘New York State High School Football Weekly’ will give high school football fans across the state one place to catch all the highlights and get a complete inside look of high school football from all over our state,” Steve Arvan, TWCS senior director of local sports programming said in a statement. “We are excited to bring such a comprehensive program to Time Warner Cable customers in New York.”
MLB, ESPN have new deal
Major League Baseball and ESPN agreed to a new eight-year contract on Tuesday.
The deal, which begins in 2014, gives ESPN the right to televise up to 90 regular-season games. It will also televise the opening night game, and it returns to televising games on the holidays (Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day).
More importantly, ESPN will get to televise one of the one-game, wild-card contests. It will alternate between the American and National leagues each year. Also, ESPN will have the rights to all potential regular season tiebreaker games. TBS currently has those rights.
ESPN will continue to telecast three Major League Baseball windows each week including Monday nights, Wednesday nights, and the “Sunday Night Baseball” franchise.
Next up will be the rights for the over-the-air package that FOX has right now, and the Sunday afternoon package on TBS. NBC Sports could be putting in a bid for one, or both, packages.
