A Schenectady man has died following an assault Thursday night on State Street, police said.

City police were at the scene of two incidents on State Street on Thursday night — a reported stabbing and an assault — one of which had a portion of the busy thoroughfare closed while police investigated. This morning, police said that Harold Gotti, 43, of Schenectady, died at Ellis Hospital. He was assaulted near 1255 State St. around 9 p.m. Thursday, police said.

The cause of death is unknown. An autopsy has been scheduled for Saturday.

The investigation Thursday night prompted police to close State Street between Division and Elm streets.

The stabbing was reported earlier Thursday night by someone who walked into the Mohawk Ambulance Service office at State and Mynderse streets, according to police spokesman Sgt. Matthew Dearing and emergency radio transmissions.

Police responded to 812 State St., less than a block from the ambulance service, Dearing said. Later, though, Dearing said police were still unsure what actually happened, with police looking into the validity of the report.

More details will be posted as they become available.
