The prime suspect in the brutal stabbing of two Amsterdam residents has been sitting behind bars since the day after police arrived on the gruesome scene on Locust Avenue roughly six months ago.
A grand jury issued an indictment this morning against Ivan Ramos, 30, of 222 Woodrow Rd., and he was arrested not long afterwards by the Amsterdam Police Department and then sent to the County Jail, Amsterdam Police announced in a release this morning.
Ramos is charged in the indictment with two counts each of first-degree murder and first-degree criminal possession of a weapon, according to a release.
He is accused of killing Cheryl A. Goss, 46, and William B. McDermott, 56, in McDermott’s apartment at 359 Locust Ave. on March 2.
Neither Amsterdam Police Chief Gregory Culick nor Montgomery County District Attorney James “Jed” Conboy were immediately available for comment this morning.
Ramos was charged March 3 — the day after the murders — with fourth-degree criminal possession of a stolen property, a felony.
Police in the release said Ramos has been incarcerated since then and he was recently remanded to state prison on unrelated charges.
Police plan to hold a press briefing on the double homicide case at the Police Department in Amsterdam on Monday.
