The town of Mayfield is bedeviled by street-sign thefts.

Mayfield Highway Superintendent Melvin Dopp tells the Gloversville Leader-Herald that 18 street signs have been snatched since July, leaving taxpayers on the hook for about $1,800 to replace them.

Dopp says it’s not just the cost; it’s also a safety hazard, possibly causing emergency responders to miss a crucial turn in the town along Great Sacandaga Lake.

The signs include some with alluring names like Beach Street and Paradise Point. But some have more mundane names like Grey Road and Bradt Road.

Town officials have asked the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office and town residents to keep their eyes peeled for any suspicious behavior.
