Hey, WTMM, how about airing some afternoon baseball?

The Major League Baseball division series have been extremely exciting, with all four series going the distance.

The games have been fun to watch. If you weren’t able to watch them, especially the afternoon contests because of being at work, then you were hoping that you could listen to the games on the radio.

However, except for carrying the New York Yankees’ radio network coverage of the series with the Baltimore Orioles, WTMM-FM (104.5) stayed away from most of the other series.

In past years, WTMM has always carried the ESPN Radio coverage of the division series games not involving the Yankees. But this year, it decided not to, although a last-minute decision was made Thursday to carry the two deciding Game 5s — San Francisco-Cincinnati in the National League, and Detroit-Oakland in the American League. The Detroit-Oakland game never made it on because of the 13-inning Game 4 between the Orioles and Yankees.

I can understand the fans’ frustration because they want to hear the games. But WTMM probably didn’t want to interrupt its two local sportstalk shows — “The Noe Show” and “Game On with Bruce Jacobs” — nearly every day during the division series.

However, fans could have gone on their computers and smart phones to listen to the games on ESPNRadio.com. That’s what I did for some of the games.

Hopefully, WTMM will decide to carry any afternoon games played in the league’s Championship Series.

Devils’ radio schedule

The Albany Devils will be back on WTMM this season, the AHL team announced Monday.

WTMM will broadcast 35 games, including 29 road contests. The first broadcast is next Saturday against at Worcester.

Cook dies

Longtime college football analyst Beano Cook died at the age of 81 Thursday.

Not only was Cook known for his vast information on college football, he was beloved for his caustic wit.

Cook, nicknamed the “Cardinal of College Football,” had been with ESPN since 1985. Prior to that, he spent four years at ABC Sports. ABC Sports and ESPN weren’t under the same corporation in 1985 like they are now.

“He was one of a kind,” ESPN executive chairman George Bodenheimer said in a statement. “There never was and never will be another Beano. His combination of humor, passion, love of college football and his engaging personality left an indelible mark on the sport and touched anyone who knew him.”
