UPDATE: No evidence of vehicle under Fort Ann rock slide

A cliff alongside a Fort Ann road collapsed early today, spilling massive boulders across the two lanes that will remain closed until at least Tuesday morning.

Police responded to Route 4 after 9 a.m. today after reports of a rock slide.

A witness told police she watched in her rear-view mirror as an SUV disappeared under the rocks. But infrared cameras didn’t detect any source of heat under the rubble, no fluids were seen flowing and there was no smell of gasoline, police said.

“Right now, there is no evidence there is a car under there,” Washington County Public Safety Director Bill Cook said early Monday afternoon.

Heavy equipment was brought in to break up and remove the rock and Cook said workers believed they could do the job without blasting. Cleanup was delayed early this afternoon as officials waited for geology experts to say whether the rest of the rock was stable.

Route 4 is a major route between the Hudson Falls-Glens Falls area and the Whitehall-Rutland area in Vermont. The rock slide is located several miles east of Lake George and north of Hudson Falls.
