Maine earthquake felt as far away as Capital Region

A 4.0 magnitude earthquake that hit southern Maine this evening sent shudders as far away as the Capital Region.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the earthquake’s epicenter about three miles west of Hollis Center, Maine — not far from Portland — at 7:12 p.m. It was about three miles deep, sending tremors to Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York and Connecticut.

There have not been any reports of damage as yet.

Capital Region residents are sharing stories on social media sites of small shudders felt across the area, including in Schenectady, Clifton Park, Latham, Saratoga Springs, Albany and Glens Falls.

Earthquakes are less frequent in the eastern United States but typically felt over a much broader region than elsewhere in the nation, according to the USGS. A magnitude 4.0 earthquake in the East typically can be felt at many places as far away as 60 miles from its epicenter.
