Some parents give their child a soccer ball and tell them to get out of the house and find something to do.
Kobey Lawton’s mom Aileen gave him a camera instead, and he’s been snapping photos ever since.
With five years of photos through his shutter and numerous award-winning shots, Kobey Lawton, 16, is gearing up for a new display scheduled for Thursday, an event the budding photographer expects will bring him some more exposure.
The Schoharie County Chamber of Commerce will be holding a “business after hours event” in the gallery at Wellington’s Herbs and Spices in Schoharie — a venue Lawton hopes will help get his name out there and further his career goals.
An 11th-grader at Schoharie Central School, Lawton will be presenting a photography exhibit titled “The Four Seasons,” a display that captures colorful leaves and barns from autumn and flowers and dew-covered grass from the summertime, among others.
Photography is a passion Lawton said he grabbed onto only halfheartedly when he started at age 11, but he gradually grew to love it.
He said photography might not be the highest-paying career out there, but that’s not the point.
“My theory is it’s not about the money; if you like what you’re doing, that’s what you do,” he said.
Lawton’s work has been honored in The Daily Gazette’s Student Gazette several times, and he’s brought home several ribbons from the Schoharie County Sunshine Fair.
It’s not always easy work. One of his images — that of an Amish farmer hard at work — required crawling through brush.
Lawton is gradually boosting his own business — he and his family put together a studio at their Schoharie home, and he’s been providing senior portraits for classmates as well.
Lawton is also providing portraits for school kids’ parents, and he’s photographed food items for a local restaurant.
His work can be found at the Middle Village Pasta and Grill in Middleburgh, at the Middleburgh Library and at Dymes Chiropractic in Cobleskill.
He’ll be standing by 25 of his newest images today during the Schoharie County Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours event.
The display’s grand opening will take placefrom 5 to 7 p.m. at Wellington’s Herbs and Spices at 649 Rickard Hill Road in Schoharie.
