The school district is looking for volunteers to serve on a committee that will screen approximately 80 candidates who have applied for a vacant principal position at the middle school.

As part of this process, the district will hold a public meeting at 6:30 p.m. today in the middle school library. School Superintendent Michael Vanyo said the meeting will solicit community input into qualifications and characteristics for the new principal. The information will help the search committee narrow down the list to appropriate candidates, school officials said.

Vanyo said he wants to form a well-balanced search committee consisting of parents, staff and board members. “The committee will screen applicants and provide final candidates to me for consideration,” he said in a news release.

Middle school Principal Jim Christopher left the district last week after five years. He took a job as a principal with the Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex Board of Cooperative Education Services. The district would like to hire a replacement in December.

Vanyo said a requirement to serving on the committee is that the person be able to attend two evening meetings to screen and conduct preliminary interviews of candidates. These meetings are scheduled for Oct. 30 and Nov. 1. Those interested should contact the superintendent’s office at 775-5791.
