Nearly three months into the college football season, UAlbany athletics has found its way back to FOX Sports 980 (WOFX-AM).

The two sides came to agreement Wednesday to bring the Great Danes’ football and men’s basketball broadcasts back to WOFX, starting with today’s football game at Sacred Heart at 1 p.m. The Great Danes had been on the station for 12 years before a sudden parting of ways in late August.

“We worked out a nice deal with 980,” Charlie Voelker, UAlbany’s associate athletic director of external affairs, said. “It’s a deal that works for both sides. It gave us a little more consistency.

Said WOFX program director Josh Everett: “We are excited to have them back. “It’s great to have first-place Great Danes football back in time for the NEC stretch run.”

In August, UAlbany announced that it would have the football and men’s basketball games on its college station, WCDB-FM (90.9). One of the reasons was that UAlbany wanted to use its website to stream not only the radio broadcast, but a video feed, as well.

“We’re looking to utilize our resources to meet our needs going forward with streaming and the website,” Voelker said at the time. “Stony Brook’s model is pretty good. They use their college radio station as, basically, a format for streaming. They stream games on audio, and they stream their games [with a] video/audio mix. We had to decide what we’re going to do and how we were going about it.

“We decided, for right now, that’s the direction we’re going to go. We’re focusing on improving our website. We’re focusing on improving our video and audio streaming, and focusing on where the industry is going.”

Well, Voelker admitted that it didn’t work out quite the way the university wanted.

There were some technical problems. In a game at Bryant, UAlbany play-by-play announcer Rodger Wyland had to use his cell phone to call the action.

“We like to work with our stud­ents to get them to the point where we can get them to do some things,” Voelker said. “We have a great rel­ationship with ’CDB. . . . I think the college radio station wanted a little more time to get ready for something like this. It was a big undertaking.”

Breeders’ Cup coverage

The NBC Sports Group announced its Breeders’ Cup broadcast schedule for next weekend.

Coverage from Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., begins Friday on NBC Sports Network from 4-8 p.m. NBCSN continues its coverage on Saturday from 3:30-8 p.m. NBC Sports will have prime-time coverage of the Breeders’ Cup Classic at 8 p.m. next Saturday.

Tom Hammond will host the coverage. The rest of the crew are analysts Gary Stevens, Randy Moss and Jerry Bailey, contributing analysts/handicappers Mike Battaglia and Bob Neumeier, host/reporter Laffit Pincay III and reporters Kenny Rice, Donna Brothers, Jay Privman and Nick Luck.

Larry Collmus will call the Breeders’ Cup Classic and Ladies’ Classic. NBC will take the call of track announcer Trevor Denman for the remaining races.

NBC Sports Group returns to televising the Breeders’ Cup for the first time since 2005. ESPN had the races between 2006-11.
