Mayfield Winterfest to highlight winter activities on lake

The second annual Mayfield Community Winterfest will be held Saturday and Sunday on Pump House Road

The second annual Mayfield Community Winterfest will be held Saturdayday and Sunday on Pump House Road at Mayfield Lake.

The Winterfest features several outdoor activities aimed at attracting youths and their families to a day of fun, said Terri Brubaker, Mayfield village clerk and a member of a volunteer community group sponsoring the event.

“It is a beautiful area where we are and it is a community event. A lot of people enjoy winter and there is nothing here unless you go to a fishing contest. We started the Winterfest and we’ll see how it goes,” Brubaker said. “You can enjoy the lake, enjoy the scenery and have some fun. We want to get the families involved,” she said.

Last year about 50 people attended the Winterfest; organizers are hoping to attract more people to this year’s event. All activities are free.

Saturday’s activities include an ice fishing contest on Mayfield Lake for children age 15 and younger from 9 a.m. to noon. The child who catches the largest fish will receive fishing-related prizes donated by a local business. “We checked the lake and the ice is thick enough,” Brubaker said. She said about 30 people have signed up for the fishing contest.

At 10 a.m. there will be a polar dip into Mayfield Lake. “The principal of Mayfield High School started the event last year. He got quite a few kids interested; the mayor went in. They all plan to do it again [today],” Brubaker said.

Also scheduled are a ladies’ frying pan toss and a kids’ frying pan toss. “We did the ladies frying pan toss last year and someone threw it 37 feet,” Brubaker said. “It is popular at winter carnivals,” she said.

Eight women participated last year; she is uncertain how many will participate today.

The snow-box derby is for children. The children create a sled out of cardboard and slide down a hill on Pump House Road onto the lake, Brubaker said.

People will be able to ice skate on the lake throughout the day and participate in ice hockey or broom ball and volleyball.

On Sunday, the Winterfest begins at 10 a.m. and will feature a vintage snowmobile show at Powerhouse Motorsports on Route 30. There also will be volleyball events, a tug-of-war and ice skating all day.

The main activity Sunday will be an outhouse race on the lake. Lorrie Valk, a member of the community group, said the rules are simple: “Folks have to build their own outhouses. Two men push it and one man sits. They have an obstacle course they have to go through and have to pick up things from the snow and then they have to go back,” she said.

Food and beverage will be provided by the Mayfield Grill, Vic’s Tavern and Nanny & Pop’s, organizers said. Both days will feature bonfires.
