Police in the Capital Region area are warning about a scam involving men who pose as bank investigators and convince people to withdraw thousands of dollars from their accounts.
They say a 91-year-old woman in Loudonville and an 81-year-old Albany woman were taken in by the ruse last week.
In each case, a man claiming to be investigating a teller at a local bank asked the women to withdraw money and bring it to a second investigator. He said the cash would be returned later along with information about how the investigation was resolved.
The first victim lost $5,800 from her Bank of America account, the second a total of $11,200 taken in two withdrawals from her Trustco account.
Police say banks don’t ask customers to help investigate possible wrongdoing.
