A demolition crew is planning to make yet another attempt to tear down the bell tower of a Watervliet church.
Attempts on Thursday and Friday to pull down the 137-foot-tall bell tower of St. Patrick’s Church were stymied when the cables attached to the structure snapped. The crew is expected try again today.
The nearly 125-year-old Catholic church in Watervliet is being demolished to make way for a supermarket. The church closed in 2011. The main structure already has been demolished, but the tower has proved to be tougher to bring down.
Preservationists went to court to save the church but lost their legal battle.
