Eddy Meet: Ram’s Brown repeats in 400

Izaiah Brown showed just how special he can be, even without runners breathing down his neck.

Brown ran away from the pack in winning his second straight 400-meter title at Saturday’s 73rd William F. Eddy Jr. Memorial Track and Field Meet, while John Hardies gutted through a pair of closing relays to help the Rams clinch the boys’ team championship.

“It’s definitely a challenge to run alone,” said Brown, an Amsterdam soph­omore. “When someone is right with you, your body pushes you to get that guy.”

“I figured I could get through it,” Hardies said after Amsterdam followed up Wednesday’s first-place effort at the Big 10 meet with its fourth invitational win this spring. “I didn’t want to let anyone down.”

Kaylee Scott of Holy Names went down and got back up in the 3,000 to post Saturday’s most dramatic victory at Schenectady High School’s Larry Mulvaney Field, while Saratoga Springs claimed the girls’ team title behind 200 winner Ellery Bianco and 1,500 winner Keelin Hollowood.

Brown, Schalmont’s Devon Willis in the triple jump, Holy Names’ Leah Triller in the 800 and Troy’s Courtney Avery in the high jump were Section II’s only repeat indiv­idual winners.

Brown remained third on Section II’s all-time 400 list, but lowered his time with a personal-record 47.72. His previous best was a state freshman-record 47.80, when he outsprinted Uniondale’s Tresean Goodwin down the stretch in prevailing at last spring’s Eddy Meet.

“I was hoping someone from Uniondale would come up like last year. Still, I’m happy.” said Brown, who was named the meet’s outstanding male performer for the second time after notching three wins. “I got the trophy, which is awesome, and I got a [personal] record. That’s a big jump for me.”

“Last year when he ran, he had someone right on him when he took the last turn. Today, at 200, he had the race,” said Amsterdam coach Kevin Wilary. “He showed how good a runner he is there.”

Brown kicked earlier than ever before in his bid for the state sophomore (46.97), Eddy Meet (47.22) and Section II (47.51) records.

“I kicked and then tried to sprint the last 100,” said the 16-year-old. “That’s the first time I kicked at 250. I decided to do it when I got here, and I felt it.”

Vincent Jackson of Amityville placed second (49.24) in the 400, and no other runner cracked 50 seconds.

“I enjoy competition,” Brown said. “I like when someone is right there. You run as hard as you can, and then shake hands afterward.”

Brown won the 200 in 22.38, ahead of Bethlehem’s Jeremy Shuman (22.71).

“The kid in lane five scared me,” said Brown. “I got a little bit of a push in that race.”

Brown anchored Amsterdam’s triumphant 1,600 relay (3:24.48) after runs by David Graveley, Brett Stanavich and Hardies. Brown’s unofficial split was 47.75.

“He ran two 200s and the 400, and still had the endurance to do that,” said Wilary.

Hardies set up Brown’s relay finish with a comeback surge.

“I got passed in the first 100 by several people,” said the senior. “I wasn’t happy with that, but I wasn’t going to let it faze me. I started picking runners off. I found a fire from within.”

Hardies anchored Amsterdam’s first-place 3,200 relay (8:09.73) after runs by Nick Raponi, Anthony Stewart and Matt Raponi. Hardies also took third in the 800 (1:55.09), setting a school record.

“Every single place we looked, we had personal bests. Graveley ran his best [1,600 relay] split by two seconds. Stewart had a 1:59 [3,200 relay split],” said Wilary, whose team totaled 46 points, 10 more than Shaker and 16 more than Amityville. “Every single kid pushes themselves in practice, and it showed today.

“The kids came in and performed, and it was great to see heading into the sectionals.”

scott recovers

Scott was leading with less than a lap to go in the 3,000 when the sophomore went tumbling to the track, and Madeline Montague of Greenwich assumed the lead.

“I tripped over my own feet. With 300 to go I took a spill,” said Scott, last season’s state small-school 3,000 champ. “When I hit the ground, I stayed there for a second. I couldn’t believe I had fallen. I had to tell myself not to give up.”

Scott scrambled to her feet and took off, and after passing Montague, pulled away for a 10:13.06 win. Montague closed in 10:18.08.

“She passed me, and I said, ‘I’ve got to run,’ ” Scott said. “I caught up to her 25 meters after I fell.”

Triller ran her second-fastest time ever in the 800, covering the two laps in 2:11.04. Last year as a sophomore, she set her personal best in winning the Eddy Meet title with a 2:10.96.

“I’m pleased,” said Triller, who won at the Johnstown Invitational last weekend with a 2:12.0. “I wanted to improve my time, and I did that. That’s my season best.”

With sectionals, the state meet qualifier and the meet itself, and the nationals ahead, Triller will have more opportunities to take down Liz Maloy’s school record of 2:09.84 that has stood since 2003. The Section II record of 2:09.21, set by Albany’s Ysanne Williams in 1998, is another goal.

“The further we go into the season, there’s more competition,” said Triller, who won Saturday by over five seconds. “That’s what I’m looking for.”

Jay Navin of Saratoga won the boys’ 800 in a personal-best 1:53.12, just mising the school record of 1:52.9 set by Dylan Welsh in 1999.

“I wanted to run as close to 1:53 as I could,” said Navin, a junior. “To do that, I had to take it out hard.”

bianco bounces back

After placing fourth in the 100, Bianco helped Saratoga win the 400 relay (49.36) and then logged a victory in the 200 (25.49).

Hollowood ran a 4:43.29 in the morning session of the 1,500, and got the win when Shaker’s Mary­anna Lansing went 4:44.40 in the afternoon session.

“I was feeling a little winded before the 100. I ran the 200 trials just before,” said Bianco, a sophomore. “If I ended on that note, it would have been a disappointment. I was feeling such a high after we won the relay, and I took it out in the 200.”

Saratoga secured the girls’ title with 44 points and Bay Shore was eight behind. Bay Shore junior Anisa Toppin was selected the meet’s outstanding female performer after winning the long jump at 18-71⁄2 and the triple jump at 38-3.

Avery went 5-7 to defend her high jump title. Kendra Lizzotte of Guilderland was best in the pole vault (11-0) and schoolmate Abby Marco won the 400 hurdles (65.40), Maddy Kenyon of Duanesburg placed first in the 400 (57.27), Nikari Carota of Queensbury won the 100 hurdles (14.94), Emma Willard got firsts from Keishorea Armstrong in the 100 (12.51) and Acacia Larsen in the discus (119-2) and Shenendehowa took the 1,600 (3:55.71) and 3,200 (9:17.0) relays.

Willis went 47-11⁄2 to defend his triple jump title. Also among the boys, Will McFee of Greenwich doubled in the shot put (53-61⁄2) and discus (164-0), Mike Kenny of Glens Falls won the pole vault (13-6), Lee Winston of Hudson (10.4) edged Shaker’s Lloyd Smalling (10.5) in the 100 and Max Comer of Schuylerville won the 400 hurdles (54.41).
