Sectional baseball, softball put on hold again

On another day when teams were sidelined due to the weather, Al Roy and Cathy Allen were the two busiest people in Section II athletics on Friday.

Roy, the Section II baseball coordinator, and Allen, the section’s softball coordinator, spent most of the day trying to patch leaks that sprung up in their rain-delayed postseason tournaments.

The entire slate of remaining baseball quarterfinals was washed away, pushing the semifinal round to Tuesday. Softball made out better, getting in four games, three indoors at the Adirondack Sports Complex in Queensbury. The girls also had their quarterfinal and semifinal dates pushed back.

“That’s one advantage Cathy has,” said Roy. “They can go to the Dome and play indoors.”

Both coordinators gave the teams involved the leeway to schedule first-round and quarterfinal games when they could.

Allen sent out an email before noon Friday to that effect.

“Everyone was calling, and everyone had different issues,” she said. “We also had to take into consideration the holiday weekend, with budgets being what they are, and having to pay bus drivers, custodians and grounds people time-and-a-half or double-time. You have people going away for the weekend.

“Wayne [Section II president Wayne Bertrand] and I talked about it, and decided to move the semifinals to Wednesday, and leave teams with the option of playing their quarterfinal game between today [Friday] and Tuesday.”

Roy couldn’t recall this amount of scrambling in his nine years as baseball coordinator.

“This is the worst,” he said. “We’ve had to move games by a day, but with the forecast for today [Friday] and Saturday, it was going to be almost impossible to play. The holiday weekend only complicated things.”

Some of the baseball teams opted to try and go today, most felt it best to wait until Sunday. Salem and Loudonville Christian School chose to play Monday night at 7 at Cook Park in Colonie.

Saratoga Central Catholic coach Phonsey Lambert spent Friday evening trying to undue the damage done by Mother Nature, in an attempt to ready his home field for a Sunday 2 p.m. Class B game with Hudson.

“We took 30 buckets of water off the field,” said Lambert. “This is the worst I’ve seen it in 28 years of coaching.”

Roy is still trying to find a site for Tuesday’s Class B semis, as Bleecker Stadium is not available.

Lady Dutch in semis

Mallory Harrigan belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning Friday to give Guilderland a 7-5 win over Columbia in the only Class AA softball quarterfinal played.

Ballston Spa beat Catholic Central, 4-1, in a Class AA quarterfinal played at the ASC.

The Lady Scotties grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning Thursday at Troy, and Abigail LeBarron made the lead stand up with a four-hitter.

Ballston Spa plays at No. 2 seed Colonie in Tuesday’s quarter­finals.

Eighth-grader Lily Sencer went 5-for-5 and drove in five runs as Cohoes topped Greenville, 14-3, in a Class B first-round game played at ASC.

Danielle McComber added three hits and a sacrifice fly for fourth-seeded Cohoes, which hosts Hudson Falls in Tuesday’s quarterfinal round.

Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons beat Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk, 10-0, in the other Class B first-round game played at ASC. The Lady Knights play at second-seeded Tamarac in the quarterfinal round.
