Bodies of two lost fishermen recovered from Great Sacandaga Lake after 10 days

The bodies of two fishermen lost on the Great Sacandaga Lake over a week ago were recovered this morning.

An ambulance left the Broadalbin public beach under police escort just after noon. A Fulton County deputy at the scene said his office received a 911 call from the beach at approximately 11 a.m., but would not say what the call was reporting.

State police Sgt. Tom Barden, a diver, confirmed later that two bodies had been found. He was not on the scene and could not provide a detailed description of events, but said the bodies were the remains of the two men who were lost on the lake along with their boat May 18.

Mark, 51, and Brent Richards, 24, a father and son from Broadalbin, launched their 8- or 10-foot jon boat from MacVean Road near the state-run Broadalbin public access early May 18.

When they did not return home that night a family member reported them missing.

The recovery of their bodies comes after a long and fruitless search. Dive teams and sonar boats scanning the area gave up after four days.

Barden said the rain and choppy weather of Memorial Day weekend may have brought the bodies from outside the search area back to the public beach, just a short distance from their original launch site.
