New York conservation officials say a record-breaking catch of a brook trout is a sign that lakes in the Adirondacks are recovering from acid rain pollution.
The Department of Environmental Conservation says the 221⁄2-inch fish caught in Hamilton County’s Silver Lake on May 16 by Rick Beauchamp of Mayfield weighed just more than 6 pounds. That’s 2 ounces heavier than the previous record fish.
The DEC says Silver Lake had no trout left in 1969 because power plant and other emissions had made the water too acidic. But an experimental stocking program started in 2002 has restored the Windfall strain of native brook trout to the lake. No other types of fish are known to live in the lake.
