A local silicone factory began negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement with union employees on Monday. The contract for workers at Momentive Performance Materials expires June 16.

“MPM is committed to achieving an agreement that delivers strong employment opportunities for the region, provides a market-competitive and comprehensive wage and benefits package, and promotes a safe work environment, while managing all of our affairs with the highest level of respect and ethical behavior. We cannot speak for the IUE-CWA [union],” said John Kompa, company vice president of investor relations and public affairs, in a news release.

The contract negotiatons are affecting two Momentive factories, one in Waterford and another in Willoughby, Ohio. Momentive is currently in contract talks with IUE-CWA Local 81359 and Local 81380 in Waterford and Local 84707 in Ohio. The negotiations involve approximately 760 employes between the two facilities, including 700 in Waterford.

“We have successfully negotiated collective bargaining agreements with the IUE-CWA for decades and we are optimistic that we will again reach a fair agreement in a timely manner,” Kompa said.

Union officials did not return phone calls from The Daily Gazette.
